Marine mammals come in many shapes and sizes. This applies to their vocalisations as much as their bodys, so different detectors are needed for different calls from different species.
The types of studies we undertake also vary enormously, so the software configuration you might use to process data from a single autonomous recorder might be very different from the configuration you need on a ship based survey, with a complex hydrophone array of many channels. On a ship, you’ll probably also use PAMGuard to collect navigation data from the ships GPS and other sensors.
For some studies, you may also want to use more than one instance of the same module. For example, you may want to generate spectrograms on high frequency and low frequency data at the same time using the FFT (Spectrogram) Engine module, or you might want to run a high frequency and a low frequency click detector, each looking for clicks at different frequencies.
PAMGuard therefore uses a modular architecture, where you the user load the modules you want to use. For some tasks, this may only be one or two, for others many dozens. You’re in charge. However, before you make a configuration with dozens of modules for dozens of species, get used to the system with one or two detectors.
Modules are organised by groups, which correspond to menu groups for adding modules in PAMGuard. For each module, we give the name, the maximum (or in some cases minimum number that can be used and a brief description. For further information, launch PAMGuard and read the online help.
Currently, PAMGuard contains 70 different modules.
If you’re new to PAMGuard, start at the Tutorials page which will help you get going.
